Amy Gilliland
(Social & Political Sciences, m.1996)
Amy came to Corpus in 1996 to study for an MPhil in Social & Political Sciences. She was on a scholarship from the United States Naval Academy, where she completed her undergraduate degree.
“I was always interested in the British education system, and I was fortunate that the Naval Academy offered scholarships for graduates at Oxford and Cambridge University. This international exposure continues to broaden my knowledge and experiences post graduate.
“The community of Corpus stays with me to this day. I have especially fond memories of the graduate and undergraduate sports programs and the May Balls. I also remain close to many of my teammates at Corpus.”
Amy also fondly recalls the porters. “They were the first people to greet me, and then I saw them every morning when I was up running very early. They were often the only other presence on campus during those hours.”
On leaving Corpus Amy joined the Navy where she held positions as a Surface Warfare Officer, a Congressional Liaison, and a Public Affairs Officer, before transitioning to a civilian career with global aerospace and defence company General Dynamics in 2005. Amy worked her way through the ranks and in 2017 was asked to lead its technology business unit, General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT). GDIT is a $8.5billion global technology enterprise with operations in 30 countries worldwide, with a staff of 30,000.
“The perspectives of the diverse student body at Corpus opened my thinking to a more global understanding. Now that I am working for a global firm with employees of many backgrounds and experiences, I appreciate this invaluable outlook.”
Amy also sits on the Board of Directors of BNY Mellon and is a member of the Board of Directors for the Economic Club of Washington, DC, as well as Vice Chair for the Northern Virginia Technology Council.
