“The location I chose for my portrait is the I staircase because it leads up to my office and has beautiful views looking out to New Court as you make your way up the five flights of stairs.

In the photo I am holding two books central to my research and teaching: one is the key textbook on International Human Rights Law, and one is East West Street, which explores the origins of genocide and crimes against humanity and is written by Corpus alumus Professor Philippe Sands.

I appreciate the strong, inspiring, fun and supportive community of women at Corpus - whether it be other fellows, students or staff. This community makes it an exciting place to research and work!”

Matilda Gillis is the current Hong Kong Link Early Career Research Fellow and College Lecturer in Law. Matilda grew up in Sydney and then moved to Canberra to study for a BA and an LLB (Hons) at The Australian National University (ANU). She subsequently practised as a solicitor in constitutional law at the Australian Government Solicitor, before undertaking an LLM in International Law at Trinity College Cambridge. Her LLM was fully funded by a Henry Arthur Hollond Studentship and she also received an honorary Lionel Murphy Endowment Postgraduate Scholarship. Matilda won various prizes in the LLM, including the Clive Parry Prize for International Law (for the highest ranked student in the international law designation of the LLM). Matilda then moved to Peterhouse, Cambridge to complete her PhD in Law, which was funded by a Peterhouse Graduate Research Studentship. Her PhD examined the interactions between domestic parliaments and international courts in the area of immigration law.

Matilda has published in the areas of trade law, international law, human rights law, constitutional law and commercial law. She has also taught at the LSE and ANU, and has supervised human rights law, international law and company law at several colleges in Cambridge. She currently supervises criminal law and international law for Corpus students.
